Z obalu původního LP (11 0509): The early sixties found pop music all over the world firmly in the hold of rock. Steady doping by means of sound tricks and effects helped to conjure from the ruins of the "golden era of rock'n'roll" a rhythm-backed high-decibel stream, and unleahed a merciless onslaught on other previous ingredients of pop music. The melody was forced into bashful retirement by the cannonade of percussion instruments and thunder of electric guitars, and the times were suddenly gone when anyone could sing for his own pleasure, unaided by technological gadgets, the tunes heard on the radio, in discotheques or at concerts.

Czechoslovakia was not spared the impact of that era which affected pop music on an internetional scale. Unlike other countries, however, it experienced - almost paralelly with the emergence of rock music - the birth, even if timid at first of a broad base of folk and country music. It was backed by the tradition of camping songs and ensembles, which in pre-war times needed nothing more than a simple tune, a guitar, and the colour of the human voice. Few people would believed at the time that mere dilettante enthuiasm and love of singing would sustain that type of performer, and that type of performer, and that type of music, until our present time, and even less people would have expected such performers to rank among the most popular entertainers of today.
A truly classic example is the PLAVCI group: this gramophone selection presents the gist of the ensemble's repertoáry and of its eleven years aktivity, which has included five LP's and an impressive series of singles on the Panton label. Like many other similar ensembles, THE RANGERS were founded in 1964, and despite some changes in the personnel from time to time, the ensemble's entire history is linked closely with the names of its present members: Antonín Hájek (bass, vocal), Jiří Veisser (violin, vocal), Milan Dufek (tambourine, vocal), Jan
Vančura (guitar, vocal), and Miroslav Řihošek (five-stringed banjo, guitar, vocal).

Eleven years of performing activities have naturally produced some changes in the enesemble's repertory, which originally included only country music and Anglo-Saxon folk songs (Sloop John B. - Green, Green - Cotton Fields - Blue Moon of Kentucky). Today the group does not hesitate to trespass on other styles (Nose for trouble - Hitchin Every Ride I Can - I'm from Georgia - home Again), or to draw on the folk lore of any nation in the world or on their own creative talent (Memories of Home). Nevertheless, the basic original ingredients of their music have remained the same: the rich sound range of a acoustic guitars, the "picking" banjo and the vocal, but developed in the meantine to high quality of performance with a perfect touch for tune mood and lyrics. Those are the factors which have put them among the top-level Czechoslovak pop music performers of today.

I cannot but repeat what I wrote on the sleeve of their first LP:
When I relax, I relax to record music, I select all my records by PLAVCI, put them on the changer, make myself a cup of coffee, stretch myself in the armchair, and listen. I listen and I hum in tune with the team who are here in my room without having entered it, and I admire their unpretentious art. I advise you most sincerely to try that approach. If you don't like coffee, try any other beverage for the occasion. That choice is immaterial, since the truly refreshing agent will be music by the PLAVCI group.
